A Midi player that’s easy to use

There are a lot of media players out there like iTunes and VLC Media Player. However, sometimes it’s a lot better to listen to certain types of music in media players that are specifically designed for them. For example, the MIDI file format is an audio format that can hold a lot of information including tone, pitch, volume, and more. Common media players like VLC Media Player won’t be able to play this music to its fullest potential. Thankfully, there is the Free MIDI Player by Media Freeware to help. Does it have enough good features to justify getting it as a separate player for MIDI audio files?

Installation and Features

The Free MIDI Player is a very simple program, and its installation process is just as easy. Once you download the installer file, all you have to do is click on it and the program will install. It will only take a few seconds, and once the installation is done, the program will run at once. The Free MIDI Player has a simple and uncomplicated interface. The window size is small which is a bit annoying since the window contains a set of virtual piano keys where the notes will be represented as the MIDI file plays. There are two main buttons at the top of the window: Open and Settings. They are both pretty self-explanatory. Below those two buttons is a black box where the information of the MIDI files is displayed. You’ll be able to see the name of the files, it’s length, and the progress in this box. Under the display box is a progress bar. Stop and Play are found below the progress bar. There are also sliders at the right-hand side of the software where users can adjust the volume, tempo, and key offset of MIDI files. Finally, at the bottom, users will find the aforementioned virtual piano. The keys that are being played will be highlighted in blue. Additionally, you can choose a different instrument to render the MIDI files. There are over a hundred instruments that you can choose from.

Problematic Aspects

This is a pretty solid program, especially for one that is absolutely free. However, there are some negative aspects that deserve to be mentioned. One very annoying feature is that you can’t move the slider across the progress bar in order to jump around. Another frustrating feature is the fact that you can only adjust the volume, tempo, and key offset of MIDI files by adjusting the sliders manually. There are indicators below the sliders with numerical values, but they can’t be edited. This is tied in with the criticism that the window is too small. It’s impossible to get an exact number when adjusting the sliders since the window is too small to be accurate.

Good Program Overall

I should say that none of the problems mentioned above are deal breakers. The Free MIDI Player is a solid program that can play MIDI files pretty well. It’s easy to use and has some nice features that most people will appreciate. If you’re looking for a MIDI player that can play MIDI files to their full potential, I recommend this program.
